RIVERBANK GRAPE
Also called: WILD GRAPE, NATIVE GRAPE
One of the earliest plants cultivated by man. Although the Riverbank Grape is native in Manitoba it is seldom seen on the prairies. It is a fully hardy, very vigorous climber. The Concorde-like fruit is great for jams, jellies, and wine—or just to look at! It is not very sweet.
Woody Vine: Vigorous climber to 6m (20 ft). Sometimes used as a groundcover. Blends well with Virginia Creeper.
Foliage: Large three lobed leaves are light green and shiny.
Flowers: Not conspicuous but fragrant.
Fruit: Blush grapes with white blush are born in clusters of 10 to 20. Not great for fresh eating but can be used for jams, jellies, and wine.
Comments: This reliable climber is worthy of much wider use. Always a great conversation piece. The cultivars ‘Beta’ and ‘Valiant’ have much more desirable fruit but are not as hardy.
