EUROPEAN MOUNTAIN ASH Sorbus aucuparia
The Mountain Ash is widely recognized for its dark green leaves, its fragrant and showy white flowers, its scarlet fruit and its outstanding fall colour. There is probably no other tree which adds more interest to the landscape.
Small tree: Height 6m (20ft).
Foliage: Dark green leaves are alternate and compound.
Flowers: White in large showy clusters.
Fruit: Red berries in large terminal clusters. Very showy. Attracts birds during fall and winter.
Fall Colour: Flame red.
Comments: Even the bark is shiny brown. The European Mountain Ash is sometimes slow to ripen and thus somewhat susceptible to tip kill and sun scald during the winter and early spring.
