PUSSY WILLOW Salix discolour Yes, you can have reliable pussy willows in your own yard every spring. Although highly prized for its annual presentation of the little "fluffies", this tree is probably best classed as a "back, back yard" tree. The crown tends to be quite open and subject to wind damage and it does become a little messy when all the unpicked pussies fall to the ground. Small tree: Height 4m (13ft). Foliage: The elliptic-oblong leaves tend to be quite white on the bottom side. Flowers: Small compact woolly catkins which appear long before the leaves and make wonderful dried bouquets. Fall Colour: Yellow. Comments: This tree will be a treasured feature in any yard. The catkins are frequently produced before all the snow is gone in the spring. | |||||||||
