SHUBERT CHOKECHERRY Prunus virginiana 'Shubert' The Shubert Chokecherry is valued for its deep purple summer foliage and its edible chokecherry fruit. The leaves of this tree emerge green and then turn dark purple by the end of June. The seed for these trees came from parent trees with very abundant, large, and only mildly astringent fruit. Shade tree: Height 7m (22ft). Foliage: The course textured green/purple leaves form a dense upright spreading canopy. Flowers: Abundant pendulous racemes of fragrant white flowers are very showy against foliage which is still dark green. Fruit: Abundant, large, tasty chokecherries are great for fresh eating and preserves. Comments: Although this tree has a tendency to sucker when the roots are disturbed, its flowering habit, its unique colour, and its tasty fruit make it an excellent tree in any back yard. | |||||||||
