THUNDERCHILD FLOWERING CRAB Malus x astringens 'Thunderchild' The Thunderchild Flowering Crab is a recent introduction. This small upright tree is valued for its purple foliage, bright pink flowers, and strong resistance to fire blight. Small tree: Height 4m (13ft). Foliage: Deep purple colour. Unlike the Shubert Chokecherry, even the immature leaves are purple. Flowers: Pink flowers contrast nicely with the purple foliage. Fruit: Fruit is small, flattened, and purplish red. It is of value only to the birds. Comments: This tree provides a strong colour accent all summer and especially in the spring. It is cloned by grafting. | |||||||||
