RUSSIAN OLIVE Elaeagnus angustifolia Also called: OLEASTER The Russian Olive is a hardy tree which is valued for its fine textured silver foliage. Unfortunately, the small olives it produces are of interest only to wildlife. It is reputed to be more salt tolerant than most trees. Small tree: Height 5m (16ft). Foliage: Silvery in colour; fine textured Flowers: Yellow and fragrant but not showy Fruit: Small silvery coloured with a single oblong seed Fall Colour: Most of the leaves are retained over the winter. Comments: The silver colour of this small tree with its oval crown adds interest to any landscape and contrasts nicely with other plants. It does have thorns. | |||||||||
