MAYDAY Prunus padus var. commutata Also called: BIRDCHERRY, EUROPEAN BIRDCHERRY The Mayday is a large, fast growing member of the chokecherry family. In full bloom, it is very showy and fragrant. Although overused in some areas, it remains a reliable, hardy and valued part of many landscapes. Shade tree: Height 12m (40ft). Foliage: Large green leaves produce a broad open canopy. Flowers: Fragrant white flowers are born in loose pendulous racemes. Fruit: Small and inconspicuous, like a miniature chokecherry. Fall Colour: Orangey yellow. Comments: The Mayday should not be planted over sidewalks or driveways because its fruit is sometimes picked up on shoes. In many areas of the city, this is the most common and conspicuous specimen tree. | |||||||||
