SILVER MAPLE Acer saccharinum This large shade tree is rarely seen. It is valued for its foliage that appears silver in colour from a distance. Shade tree: Height 18m (60ft). Foliage: Leaves are five lobed and deeply cleft giving them a delicate texture. Light green on top side and silver coloured underneath. Flowers: Small deep red flowers are produced early, before the leaves. Although small they are quite conspicuous. Fruit: Large fleshy "maple helicopters"; ripen in early June. Fall Colour: Clear yellow. Comments: Although winter hardiness may be a problem in rural areas, this stately tree is worthy of trial. | |||||||||
