MANITOBA MAPLE Acer negundo Also called: BOXELDER Although the Manitoba Maple is often referred to as a weedy tree, there are many very excellent specimens in older yards. It is hardy, drought tolerant, and a fast grower. The Manitoba Maple was treasured by the pioneers. Shade tree: Height 15m (45ft). Foliage: Yellowish green. Leaves are compound with three to five leaflets. Fruit: The little "helicopters" which are typical of all maples are sometimes produced in great abundance. Fall Colour: Yellow. Comments: This tree often drips a sticky honeydew, so it should not be planted over a patio or a parking spot. The honeydew is water soluble and easily removed with the garden hose. It is a great tree for climbing and for tree houses. When a fast growing, reliable shade tree is required, this tree should not be overlooked. | |||||||||
