COLORADO SPRUCE Picea pungens This large evergreen has a stiffer, more formal appearance than the white spruce. Although it is also somewhat less hardy, it does perfectly well in our area. This tree is frequently referred to as the "Blue Spruce". Evergreen tree: Height 20m (65ft) Foliage: Needles range from green to blue, to silver green. If a reliable blue colour is important, a grafted cultivar should be selected. Otherwise, the blue colour may be lost as the tree matures. Fruit: Cones up to three inches long are born on the upper part of the tree. Comments: Like the White Spruce, this tree gobbles up a lot of real estate as it matures. It also casts a very strong rain shadow. Because the needles are stiffer and sharper, it is a very unfriendly tree. Where space allows, this tree can easily become a stately focal point in any landscape. PLANT FINDER EVERGREEN INDEX HOME
